{"id":1165,"date":"2018-09-09T15:37:20","date_gmt":"2018-09-09T07:37:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/albertyap.com\/blogs\/?p=1165"},"modified":"2018-09-09T16:00:43","modified_gmt":"2018-09-09T08:00:43","slug":"nikon-z7-raw","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/albertyap.com\/blogs\/2018\/nikon-z7-raw\/","title":{"rendered":"What you can do to a Nikon Z 7 massive RAW file?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>1 year ago, I was in Hong Kong with a Nikon D850 and <a href=\"https:\/\/albertyap.com\/blogs\/2017\/08\/24\/a-night-before-typhoon-hato-in-hong-kong\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">shot a night cityscape panorama<\/a> right when the typhoon &#8211; Hato landed.\u00a0 Fast forward 1 year later, I had the opportunity to carry the latest and the brand new mirrorless ILC system from Nikon to Taiwan.<\/p>\n<p>I believe you can find tons of reviews and info online currently and I am not going to bored you with that anymore.\u00a0 Instead,\u00a0I would like to share the actual out-of-camera RAW output, shot in 14-bits Loseless Compressed for you to play around and have some ideas what the camera can provide.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>As we know, Nikon files typically can be recovered nicely in the shadow area, so the shot was intendedly shot to preserved as much highlight as possible.\u00a0 In this example, the camera was set to -1.7EV under Aperture priority mode, and let the camera do the rest.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1166\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1166\" style=\"width: 494px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/albertyap.com\/blogs\/2018\/09\/09\/nikon-z7-raw\/dsc_1931ori\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1166\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1166 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/albertyap.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/DSC_1931ori-494x329.jpg\" alt=\"-1.7EV\" width=\"494\" height=\"329\" srcset=\"https:\/\/albertyap.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/DSC_1931ori-494x329.jpg 494w, https:\/\/albertyap.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/DSC_1931ori-200x133.jpg 200w, https:\/\/albertyap.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/DSC_1931ori-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 494px) 100vw, 494px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1166\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Intendedly underexposed to -1.7EV to preserved highlight<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The photo was shot with the new <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nikon-asia.com\/en_Asia\/product\/nikkor-lenses\/z-mount\/single-focal-length\/wide-angle\/nikkor-z-35mm-f-1-8-s\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nikkor Z 35mm f\/1.8 S<\/a> lens.\u00a0 From the output, you can see that the details was nicely captured despite the strong backlit situation and generally dimmed foreground area.\u00a0 To illustrate what you can do in post, I did some basic adjustment to bring out the shadow details and recreated the tones using Adobe Camera Raw (Which are currently in beta version for Nikon Z).<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1167\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1167\" style=\"width: 494px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/albertyap.com\/blogs\/2018\/09\/09\/nikon-z7-raw\/dsc_1931web\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1167\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1167\" src=\"https:\/\/albertyap.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/DSC_1931WEB-494x329.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"494\" height=\"329\" srcset=\"https:\/\/albertyap.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/DSC_1931WEB-494x329.jpg 494w, https:\/\/albertyap.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/DSC_1931WEB-200x133.jpg 200w, https:\/\/albertyap.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/DSC_1931WEB-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/albertyap.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/DSC_1931WEB.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 494px) 100vw, 494px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1167\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Adjusted to bring out shadow details and color while preserving highlight as much as possible.
