{"id":1012,"date":"2015-04-20T15:31:45","date_gmt":"2015-04-20T07:31:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/albertyap.com\/blogs\/?p=1012"},"modified":"2020-05-01T01:39:30","modified_gmt":"2020-04-30T17:39:30","slug":"nikon-wifi-extra","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/albertyap.com\/blogs\/2015\/nikon-wifi-extra\/","title":{"rendered":"How to use WiFi on your Nikon DSLR with computers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The high-end pro series of Nikon DSLR has been enjoying WiFi since many years ago, and finally we get to use that in more affordable, mass-market models, you just have to keep in mind that in order for this to work you have to have a good internet connection, we suggest to follow this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.EATEL.com\/residential\/internet\/\">recomendation about best wi-fi<\/a> online!<\/p>\n<p>Newer models such as D750, D7200, D5500 &amp; D5300 has the feature\u00a0built-in &amp;\u00a0other models\u00a0including D3200, D3300, D5200, D7100, D600, D610 &amp; Df uses an optional\u00a0dongle (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nikon.com.my\/en_MY\/product\/accessories\/slr-cameras\/gps-accessories-wireless-transmitters\/wu-1a-wireless-mobile-adapter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Wu-1a &amp; Wu-1b<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Unlike the pro-series, the WiFi feature in these camera are officially designed to work with smart devices only. \u00a0The Nikon\u00a0apps will only work with Android or iOS devices, does that means you can&#8217;t use it with laptop and etc?<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Afraid not, I am writing this post to share\u00a0about a 3rd party application named qDslrDashboard (<a href=\"http:\/\/dslrdashboard.info\/downloads\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Available for most common platform including PC, Mac, Android and even Rasberry Pi<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/albertyap.com\/blogs\/2015\/04\/20\/nikon-wifi-extra\/wifi-extra\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1013\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-1013\" src=\"https:\/\/albertyap.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/WIFI-EXTRA-494x266.jpg\" alt=\"WIFI-EXTRA\" width=\"494\" height=\"266\" srcset=\"https:\/\/albertyap.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/WIFI-EXTRA-494x266.jpg 494w, https:\/\/albertyap.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/WIFI-EXTRA-288x155.jpg 288w, https:\/\/albertyap.com\/blogs\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/WIFI-EXTRA.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 494px) 100vw, 494px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;qDslrDashboard is a free cross platform application for controlling Nikon and some other\u00a0DSLR cameras. It uses the\u00a0<a title=\"Picture Transfer Protocol\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Picture_Transfer_Protocol\">PTP<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a title=\"Picture Transfer Protocol over IP\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Picture_Transfer_Protocol\">PTP\/IP<\/a>\u00a0protocol to communicate with the connected DSLR camera. Currently it runs on Android, iOS, Linux, OSX and Windows platforms&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Despite listed as in-development stage still, this handy application works for most Nikon DSLR and is stable enough for daily usage. \u00a0In short, the application open up a lot of possibilities for Nikon WiFi of top of\u00a0the official apps.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">[UPDATE &#8211; March 2019]\u00a0 As you may have noticed, this post was created in 2015, and things has changed a lot since then.\u00a0 This solution was originally written for Nikon cameras supporting Nikon&#8217;s WMU (Wireless Mobile Utility), it may not work with some of the newer cameras until the qDSLRDashboard was patched to do so.\u00a0 Please refer to the <a href=\"https:\/\/dslrdashboard.info\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">official site<\/a> for details.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>To get you started, this is what I have used in my workshop,<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Ad-hoc WiFi connection from the camera to my laptop (Windows 7)<\/li>\n<li>qDslrDashboard with the following configuration\n<ol>\n<li>Connect Nikon DSLR via Wireless connection<\/li>\n<li>Depend on what I need to do, if I am shooting a real-life subject for demo, I&#8217;ll configure the apps as &#8220;Camera-mode&#8221;
